Statement
WHY I MAKE MY ART: I enjoy the process of creating my art almost as much as experiencing the final product. I make my art as a logical extension of my architectural career. I apply the same work ethic to my art as I did my architecture. I treat each piece as a project. My work is complex and requires skill and patience in order to achieve the ultimate effect.
WHAT INSPIRES ME: People inspire me. People admire the skill and effort required, as well as the aesthetics of my art. I want people to understand and appreciate the process as well as the finished work. My work is also inspired by quilt patterns, chair caning, and Italian abstract art.
WHAT IT REPRESENTS: My artwork represents order and discipline. My work represents the creation of three dimensional surfaces and objects from two dimensional patterns and parts. My work is defined by intricate patterns and textures that emphasize the play of light and shadow.
WHAT IT’S MADE OF: My art consists of layered cut-paper and other two dimensional sheet materials. I like paper because it’s easy to work with and doesn't require a lot of equipment. My tools include an X-ACTO knife, straight edge, compass, pin, tweezers, bright lights. I use different colors, textures, and weights of paper, depending on the needs of the artwork.
HOW IT’S MADE: I started my architectural career as a model builder. That’s why I enjoy building objects and patterns. After creating and sketching my vision, I use 3D modeling and visualization software to preview and refine my art. I then develop a plan of each layer and make prints to use as a guide. I overlay the print onto the selected paper and pierce through the print to the paper at every intersection. My work is then hand-cut (no computer cutters). I then layer each sheet over the other, keeping the exact alignment. I use adhesive-backed foam spacers to achieve the required spacing between layers and the three dimensional effect.
